Health/Fitness

There are two main components for developing and maintaining excellent health - nutritional diet and exercise.  If you are already sick or not feeling well, and have not been getting better under your doctor's care, you may be interested in some of the Alternative Healing Modalities briefly described below in the bottom third of this page.

Diet + Lifestyle

Why is Diet Important to your health?

"Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." ~ Albert Einstein

You are what you eat.  So the best things you can eat if you want to be alive and healthy for a long time are live, water rich, whole foods - fresh, organic fruits and vegetables.  If you read enough about it, the eveidence becomes overwhelming.

What to Read

General Diet/Lifestyle books
The best place to begin understanding health for a simple, easy to read yet thorough and well researched analysis is by reading Diet for a New America by John Robbins.  Also, his books Healthy at 100 and Reclaiming our Health are both excellent.  Another great book is Fit for Life by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond.  If you want some perspective on why snack foods, sweets and processed foods seem to taste so good, read Fighting the Food Giants, written by a food chemist.  Also, Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser is highly recommended.  And if you haven't yet seen the doumentary movie Super Size Me, this is a must.  This shows you just how quickly your health can deteriorate if you were to eat nothing but fast food for 30 days.

What to read if you are already having health problems
I also highly recommend Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Asthma, Allergies, Autism, and ADHD by Dr. Kenneth Bock.  Also, if you have any digestive problems, gas, bloating, chronic fatigue, or abdominal pain, I highly recommend you read Celiac Disease: The Hidden Epidemic by Dr. Peter Green.  If you are diabetic, check out The Zone and The Soy Zone by Barry Sears.  If you have heart disease, read Reversing Heart Disease by Dean Ornish.  If you just want to feel better overall, but do not know where to start, I highly recommmend The Cure by Dr. Timothy Brantley.

Exercise/Fitness

Always check first with your doctor before beginning any exercise program.  Always start slowly and gradually and be sure to stretch and warm up before beginning any exercise and and stretch and warm down after exercise.   The key to sustaining an exercise program is to find something you love to do and do it.  You will get addicted to feeling great, and won't want to miss it.  If your exercise program isn't fun, find one that is!  You should be having a blast every time!

Always listen to and respect messages from your body.  Do not try to work through the pain unless you really know what you are doing and understand the risks.  Many highly conditioned athletes have had injuries or even died because they did not listen to and recognize warning signs from their bodies.  This can lead to a serious injury or fatality.

The well known runner, Jim Fixx, who wrote a book that led to the jogging movement of the seventies, died of a massive heart attack, because he always ran through the pain, and ignored signals from his body that somemthing was seriously wrong.  He had a series of mini heart attacks while running, but never got medical attention.

Always be safe, and work up to fitness slowly.  Rome was not built in a day, nor will you be.  The best thing that you can do if you are out of shape is go for a walk every day, preferably somewhere in nature rather than at the mall, and gradually make the walk longer and longer.  A hike in the woods or on the beach will do wonders for your fitness and your peace of mind.
